Desert Heat by J. A. Jance

My quest to read as many police procedural mysteries as I can before my first Mystery Fiends Book Discussion Group continues. To that end I read J. A. Jance’s “Desert Heat”, first in the Sheriff Joanna Brady series. In this book Joanna Brady is not yet the sheriff and doesn’t even decide to run for sheriff until the end of the book. The book begins with Joanna waiting for her husband on their anniversary, only to find him mortally wounded when she finally goes looking for him. He dies in the hospital and the subsequent investigation makes it look like her husband was a bad cop who tried to take his own life. Joanna doesn’t believe it and works to clear his name and solve what she believes to be his murder. While overall this book to me seemed a little slow, I did feel like it was just laying the groundwork for the rest of the series. I liked the main character and will most likely read the next book or two before deciding whether or not to continue reading all of the books in the series.
